VIRUS - A computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without the permission or knowledge of the owner. A virus can only spread from one computer to another when its host is taken to another computer; for instance because a user sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on a removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive most of the time without their knowledge. This is why some people don't let you insert a foreign USB drive, floppy or CD into their PC and why you should never open email that you are unfamiliar with. Go Back to definitions

VPN - Stands for VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK and is a computer network which is carried by open connections through the internet, as opposed to running across a single private network. This allows you to work from home on your office computer as if you were there. Go Back to definitions

IP ADDRESS - Stands for INTERNET PROTOCOL Address and is a unique number which each computer acquires automatically for connecting to the internet or network. This address is in 'a.b.c.d' format where each letter (separated by a period) is a number with value from 0 to 255. An example would be 192.168.1.100. Go Back to definitions

DNS - Stands for DOMAIN NAME SERVER. These are specialized computers which translate the domain names such as www.DiJitS-TECH.com into their corresponding IP addresses so that the recipient computers can be located and the data is correctly routed. Every domain name on the web, yes even www.DiJitS-TECH.com, has a corresponding IP address. Domain names were created because they were a lot easier for people to remember than those IP addresses. ISP - Simply INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER. These are the people you pay every month to send you internet service. Sometimes called INTERNET ACCESS PROVIDER (IAP). Go Back to definitions

HTTP - Stands for HYPER-TEXT TRANSFER PROTOCOL and is the protocol used by the World Wide Web. HTTP tells the internet how messages are to be formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands.
